Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Slant markers occupy a specific regulatory category in New Jersey cemeteries. Many NJ cemeteries that allow slant-style markers permit them in sections separate from flat-grave areas — sections where above-grade profile markers are acceptable. In flat-grave or flush-marker sections, only flat and flush markers are typically allowed, and slant markers would not be permitted regardless of their profile height. Slant Marker Shop verifies with each receiving cemetery whether a slant marker is permissible in the relevant section before beginning any design work. This step is essential for a memorial that will involve NJ cemetery regulations.

Foundation Requirements

Slant markers require concrete foundations like any other ground-level or partially raised marker in New Jersey. The angled base of a slant marker places uneven weight on the foundation, making proper foundation preparation especially important for long-term stability. Most NJ cemeteries require foundations reaching below the frost line — typically 36 inches in northern counties — to prevent frost heave. Slant Marker Shop's installation team prepares all foundations as part of the standard installation service, sizing the foundation to the marker's footprint and the cemetery's specification.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Denominational cemeteries in Morris, Essex, Bergen, and other NJ counties may carry additional requirements that affect slant marker designs. Some faith-affiliated grounds specify that markers may not exceed a particular height above grade — which could affect whether a slant marker qualifies for installation at a specific section of the ground. Our team contacts faith-affiliated cemetery offices directly before designing any slant or grave marker for installation at a denominational ground, confirming all applicable requirements before fabrication begins.

Grave Marker

A slant marker headstone combines elements of a flat grave marker and an upright monument. The marker has a granite base that sits close to grade, and an angled upper face — typically inclined at an angle between 30 and 45 degrees — that tilts the inscription toward the viewer. This angled-face design provides a reading advantage over purely flat markers, where visitors must look straight down to read the inscription. At Slant Marker Shop, slant markers are hand-carved from American-made granite in our Morris County, NJ workshop. Absolute Black granite is the most commonly selected material for its crisp contrast with hand-carved or engraved lettering. Silver Gray and warmer granite varieties — Balmoral Red, Indian Mahogany — are also available. The front face of a slant marker accepts the full range of inscription and imagery options: portrait etchings, religious symbols, decorative borders, and text in English, Russian, or Polish. For cemeteries that permit flat and flush markers in certain sections and slant markers in others, Slant Marker Shop produces both — with the same workshop craftsmanship and American-made material applied equally. As veteran and military marker specialists, we also produce slant companion markers for veterans interred alongside VA-provided government headstones, in sections where slant markers are permitted and the cemetery approves the companion format. Flat and flush configurations remain available for cemeteries that require grade-level markers in the relevant section.

Granite Options

The granite used for slant markers at Slant Marker Shop is American-made and processed in our own Morris County facility. The angled face of a slant marker receives the same mirror-polish treatment as the top face of a flat marker — this polished surface improves the legibility of inscriptions and resists moisture absorption in NJ's seasonal climate. The base section of the slant marker, which sits at grade, can be finished to match the angled face or left with a thermal or sawn texture depending on the family's preference and the cemetery's requirements. Slant marker bases in New Jersey typically range from four to ten inches in depth at the front, providing a stable, weighted base for the angled face above.

Custom Design Process

Designing a slant marker headstone at Slant Marker Shop begins with confirming the cemetery's permission for the style and its size requirements. After verification, a consultation at our Morris County showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish establishes the inscription, imagery, granite variety, and design preferences. Our artisans produce a scaled design proof showing the angled face at the confirmed dimensions, which the family reviews and approves before any granite is cut. The fabricated slant marker is then delivered to the cemetery and installed by our team on a properly prepared concrete foundation.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is consultation. A Slant Marker Shop designer meets with the family at our Morris County, NJ showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish, discussing the inscription, imagery, granite variety, and the cemetery. Step two is cemetery verification. We contact the cemetery to confirm whether slant markers are permitted in the relevant section, the permitted dimensions, and the foundation requirements. This step is non-negotiable — different cemetery sections have different rules, and slant markers are not universally permitted. Step three is the design proof. Our team prepares a scaled layout of the slant marker's angled face — showing the inscription, imagery, and borders — for family review and approval. No fabrication begins until approval is received. Step four is fabrication. The approved slant marker is cut from American-made granite in our Morris County workshop. The angled face is polished and hand-carved by our artisans, with each element checked against the approved proof. Step five is quality review. The completed marker is inspected against the proof — dimensions, lettering, imagery, face polish — before delivery. Over 80 years of American-made, hand-carved grave markers inform the standard applied here. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the slant marker to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation to the specified depth and dimensions, and installs the piece level and compliant with the cemetery's requirements.
